Coyotes kill deer fawns. Study after study has proven this fact, but they also kill turkeys. This has prompted the Granville County Gobblers NWTF Chapter to make a statement. “Save a turkey; shoot a coyote.”
And that’s more than just talk. The organization is hosting a multi-day coyote hunt aimed at decreasing the population of coyotes in the area, and they are giving out cash prizes for biggest coyote and for most coyotes harvested during the hunt. A gun raffle will also take place.
Registration is $30 per team, and each team can consist of up to three hunters. Youth hunters are encouraged, and those 16-years-old and younger will not count against the team number. Sign in and weigh-in will take place at Corinth Fire Dept. in Oxford, N.C.
Teams should sign in between 6 and 8 p.m. on Feb. 17, with weigh in taking place at 3 p.m. on Feb. 19.
Every coyote taken during the competition must be harvested between the hours of 6 p.m. on Feb. 17 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 19. Organizers will thoroughly inspect each coyote at weigh-in, and no frozen carcasses or trapped coyotes will be allowed.
