The Lowcountry chapter of Safari Club International held its seventh annual Wounded Warrior Hunt in late October, providing hunting opportunities for 45 participants on 23 different properties with 100 volunteers.

Thirty wounded war vets from as far away as Texas took part, as well as 15 disabled youths, with an afternoon hunt followed by a morning hunt that resulted in 16 deer and two wild hogs being taken. The biggest buck was a 9-pointer, and three 8-pointers were taken.

The deer and hogs were processed at no charge, any extra venison was donated to soup kitchens and halfway houses, and taxidermists offered to mount the bucks at no charge.

Nemours Plantation near Yemassee was the central location for the hunt, with the live oaks along the sandy drive into the property wrapped with American flag bunting.

“Nemours Wildlife Federation has hosted the Wounded Warrior hunt every year since its inception,” said Mark Peterson, who directed the event.

The first year the hunt was held, 12 hunters and 15 volunteers were involved, hunting on six plantations.

Doc Thurston of the Carolinas SCI chapter in Charlotte provided 400 pounds of wild game for a banquet after the second day’s hunt. Three executive chefs from the Lowcountry chapter of the American Culinary Federation prepared the first night’s buffet with food donated by Sysco Food Distributors.

Sponsors for the event included Dead Down Wind, Thermacell, the Outdoor Dream Foundation, the S.C. Disabled Sportsman Association, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, SCI’s International Humanitarian Foundation, SCI chapters in Raleigh, N.C., and Charlotte, and the National Rifle Association.
