Portable GPS units make mountain navigation a snap

A portable, hand-held GPS unit can be a great aid to deer hunters who have long hikes back into the mountains to their hunting areas.

Portable GPS units are invaluable when hunting in the mountains. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of units available at many different price points.

Bushnell offers a simple, easy-to-use unit called The BackTracker, which comes in two versions; one will set two different way points and the other three. This makes trekking into your stand easy and simple. The watch-sized unit marks your truck and stand and shows the most direct route.

Other brands such as Garmin, Lowrance and Magellan offer many different styles and varieties. Depending on what you want to do, the color screen and touch screen can make it simpler for many users accustomed to using touch-screen devices. Several also offer aerial photos and topographical maps, making scouting and finding these locations easier on the go.
