Old logging roads, often found on topo maps, can be excellent avenues to reach your chosen hunting spot in the mountains.

In the Mountain Hunt Unit, bear season interrupts firearm season for deer. For two weeks during October, firearm season for deer is closed.

However, archery season for deer remains open. Bowhunters can have the woods to themselves, while having the opportunity to harvest either a bear of deer if they buy a separate bear tag from the SCDNR for $25.

Both black bears and deer share the same love for acorns, and hunting a good stand of white oaks will definitely up the odds for an opportunity for a mixed bag.

One word of caution; during the hound season for bears, hunters will often chase bears for miles. Sometimes this means the dogs and bears will run right past your stand. While it is a good show watching the chase from an elevated platform, it can be a bit upsetting to see your deer hunt interrupted. However, unless the bear trees close by, the disturbance is short lived and the woods return to their quiet, subdued state.
