Lowcountry hunters killing lots of bucks in velvet

Hunters are braving the heat and rain for early-season bucks in velvet

With such an early start date for deer hunting season, it’s not uncommon for South Carolina hunters to kill bucks in velvet. In most other states, the velvet has peeled from the antlers of bucks by the time their season starts. And plenty of Palmetto State bucks have already shed their velvet. But plenty of hunters are finding trophies that still have theirs.

Great Outdoors Taxidermy & Deer Processing has gotten its share of bucks in velvet since this past weekend, when the 2021 deer hunting season started in Game Zones 3 & 4. Some are small bucks that are being bought in for processing, some are “first bucks” for youth hunters that may warrant some taxidermy. And some are true wall hangers that have checked off a hunter’s bucket list wish.
