Insect repellents are imperative

Mesh “bug” suits and chemical repellents are necessities that turn muzzleloader hunts in southeastern North Carolina into good experiences.

The ThermaCELL is a staple. The device operates on a butane gas cartridge, which heats a metal element with the flip of a self-igniter. The element heats a felt wafer impregnated with insect repellent, issuing a vapor trail that shoos mosquitoes from an area as large as 20 feet square. It is much less detectible to a deer’s nose than an aerosol repellent.

Spraying clothing with Permethrin tick repellent kills ticks that crawl along six inches of treated fabric. Once dry, Permethrin-based products are odorless and remain effective through at least six washings.
