Using portable stands such as climbers or Loc-On style stands when hunting rub lines allows hunters to be mobile and move to where the bucks are.
Veteran South Carolina hunter David Catoe said, “I have killed all of my big bucks out of my climber and firmly believe that it makes a difference.”
By leaving as little sign as possible, he is able to sneak in and out of a location undetected, without disturbing bucks in the area. Climbers are a great way to remain stealthy, maneuver and make adjustments to wind direction and terrain as situations change.
Access to a stand site is also critical. Once a good location is found and a tree selected, North Carolina hunter Chad Simpson takes the time to map out an access route.
“If I can’t get to my stand without blowing the deer out, my scouting is meaningless.” he said.
Simpson puts a lot of effort into finding the best approach to his stand location, often trimming limbs and using reflective tacks to mark his trail.
“It only makes sense that I am not wandering around in the dark looking for my tree, that I can come straight to it as quietly as possible and get in my stand,” he said.
