Fewer deer, but bigger?!

Statistics show that the deer density is lower in Game Zone 1, but the deer are larger, with 2 1/2-year old bucks sporting 7.3 points compared to the statewide average of 6.3 points for deer of the same age. This is possibly due to the limited pressure and limited harvest compared to other zones, allowing bucks to reach a larger age class.

According to the SCDNR Harvest Report for 2012, the Mountain unit WMA lands accounted for 1,302 deer or 4.2 deer per square mile. While this may seem like a small number compared to other counties or game zones. The success rate for the Mountain Unit was at a respectable 59.3% compared to the statewide average of 67%. Considering the relatively few hunters compared to other areas, and the terrain in which they are hunted. The Mountain unit is certainly worth a look for better and quality deer.
