13-year-old wins November Bag-A-Buck contest
Kinley Ferguson, a 13-year-old seventh-grader from Liberty, N.C., has killed 14 deer since taking her first whitetail at age five. But she admitted that the most-recent one, an 8-point Randolph County buck, was the most exciting — but maybe even more exciting for her hunting buddy.
“I was pretty excited, but I think my dad was even more excited than I was,” Ferguson said of the Nov. 20 afternoon hunt when she dropped an 8-point, 120-inch buck with a single shot from her Ruger .243 at 150 yards across a 3-acre food plot. “I was more excited with this one, because it’s my biggest deer, and it was killed on new land where I’d never hunted before.”
A week later, Ferguson’s mother entered her buck in Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest, and the entry was drawn as the winner of the November monthly contest on Nov. 30.
Each monthly winner receives a prize package that includes a $25 gift certificate to the online Sportsman Outdoor Store and a free one-year Carolina Sportsman magazine subscription.
The grand-prize winner, drawn from all entries and announced in the February issue of Carolina Sportsman magazine, will receive a hunt at Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge in Chesterfield, S.C., a 3-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman and a $50 gift certificate to the Sportsman Outdoor Store.
Ferguson’s father, Jeff, a scorer for the N.C. Bowhunters Association, had seen the buck on opening day of blackpowder season in late October in a food plot of brassicas and clover but passed it up. He and his daughter hunted the food plot four or five times, hoping it would show up, before the buck finally returned at about 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 20.
