Deer limit in holding pattern but may change in 2015

Setting buck limits would potentially allow more young deer to survive long enough to grow into trophy animals.

Biologist Charles Ruth said that South Carolina’s season bag limits for deer have been on a holding pattern for several years, but there may be new signs of life in the next legislation session in 2015.

“The status of the SCDNR buck limit and deer-tagging recommendations remains in a holding pattern, but there seems to be some support from the legislature to possibly work on a bill in 2015,” Ruth said. “For a long time, we’ve had support from the vast majority of deer hunters based on hunter-opinion surveys to have a specific buck limit. Now, in addition to that, we can clearly implicate coyotes with having a negative impact on our deer herd, and it’s simply sound biological management that we consider limits to better manage the herd.

“Hopefully we’ll see some forward progress during the 2015 legislative session, and I think SCDNR will be putting more emphasis on getting this on the agenda.”
