According to Charles Ruth, the SCDNR’s deer and turkey project supervisor, not all deer habitat is equal in the state of South Carolina. The 2013 Deer Density Map shows the latest data on deer densities in the state.
Ruth said that around major rivers and drainages, where habitat is best, deer numbers are typically highest.
“Any area where hunters with access to good-sized tracts of land or a large clubs put a focused effort on quality habitat, including food plots and appropriate management guidelines, the hunting can be excellent,” Ruth said. “Localized hot spots can be found throughout the state, but this map is a good overall guideline for hunters to consider.”
Ruth said that areas where deer populations are low are also sometimes excellent places for trophy bucks because of less competition for food and nutrients. He said low-density deer population areas can have potentially good hunting for trophy bucks.
