Bear winners from 2022 Dixie Deer Classic
Four black bear award were presented at the 2022 Dixie Deer Classic, held March 4-6 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. Three of the bears were killed in North Carolina, with the fourth bear coming from Virginia.
Karen Mitchell killed a black bear that measured 17 9/16 inches out of Hyde County in 2020. She won the 2020 Black Bear NC Female Gun category.
Timothy Leary took top honors for 2020 Black Bear NC Male Gun with a Camden County bear that taped out at 20 13/16 inches.
Mark Stokes killed a Pamlico County bear that scored 21 8/16 inches, winning the 2021 Black Bear NC Male Gun award.
Jackie Cole killed a 21 15/16-inch bruin that won him the 2021 Black Bear Virginia Male Gun award.
This was the third time black bears have been scored at the Dixie Deer Classic. Black bears are scored by measuring the dried skulls’ length and width. They are scored in 1/16 of an inch. For comparison to whitetail deer, a black bear scoring 18 inches is equivalent to a 125-inch deer. Killing a 21-inch black bear is akin to killing a 170-inch whitetail.
