Take four of top five on Clarks Hill
Teams from South Carolina teams took four of the top five places, missing out only on first place, at the Sept. 18 Cabela’s King Kat Tournament on Clarks Hill Lake.
Mike Maxwell of Bowman, Ga., and George Brooks and Matthew Brooks of Comer, Ga., caught a 5-fish limit weighing in 17.65 pounds, which was good for the first-place prize money of $5000. Their big fish weighed 7.7 pounds, and they received an additional $500.
The father-and-son team of Martin and Jackson Steed of Jackson, competing in their first catfish tournaments, finished second with 10.75 pounds, taking home $3,000.
Neal Ferguson, Hunter Ferqueron and Leigh Redden, all from Greenwood, finished third with 6.9 pounds, good for $1,000. Eric Brinkley of Aiken and Jeff Goff of Jackson finished fourth with 5.25. Gary Case of Pendleton and Ronnie Stancil of Liberty finished fifth with 2.85 pounds.
Lineberger wins BFL Super Tournament
Shane Lineberger of Lincolnton, N.C., won the two-day BFL Super Tournament on Lake Hartwell Sept. 10-11 with a combined weight of 25.15 pounds.
Lineberger rallied from ninth place after the first day to take home the first-prize money of $4,931, plus a $2,000 sponsor’s bonus. He caught most of his fish on a buzzbait in extremely shallow water in the back of creeks and a half-ounce black Brian’s Bee jig around boat docks.
Gregg Rikard of Leesville finished second with 25-11 for $2,466, followed by Joey Sabbagha of Little Mountain with 23-4 for $1,644. Rounding out the top five were Brad Fowler of Pendleton with 23-0 for $1,151 and Maurice Freeze of Concord, N.C., with 22-9 for $986, plus a $1,000 sponsor’s.
Jimmy Bihlear of Goose Creek won the co-angler side with 15-15, taking home $2,403. Johnny Hancox of West Union was second with 15-9 for $1,02. Chris Tinsley of Pisgah Forest, N.C., took third with 13-3 and won $801.
Clemson is second at Southeast Regional
Andy Wicker and Harold Turner of Clemson’s fishing team finished second in early September in the FLW College Fishing Series’s Southeast Regional tournament on Alabama’s Lake Harding.
Wicker and Harding were just four ounces off the lead entering the final day, and that’s where they finished with 16-12.
“The places we were fishing, we didn’t have any company in there, we just ran out of fish,” Wicker said. “Our crankbait bite died off.”
Greenville couple wins championship
The husband-and-wife team of Don and Martha Goodfellow of Greenville won the American Bass Association’s Couples Series National Championship on Lake Hartwell Sept. 2-3.
The Goodfellows were third after the first day, when they weighed in four fish at 11.92 pounds. One of those was a 5.46-pound bass that was the tournament’s big fish.
On the second day, they landed a 5-fish limit weighing 14.17 pounts to seal the win with 26.09.
“All of our fish came from one 100-acre area,” Don Goodfellow said. “We caught four fish on the first day and seven on the second day. We caught better fish on the second day. On the first morning, we tried crankbaits, but that just didn’t happen for us. There were fish schooling around us, but they didn’t want what we were throwing so we started zeroing in on specific cover. We targeted brush piles and that’s where we caught all of our fish.
Launching out of Gum Branch Landing, the Goodfellows beat 78 other teams from 15 states. Each team qualified to fish the championship tournament by competing in a series of events in various state divisions.
Millers win catfish club event on Wateree
Bobby and Scott Miller won the Sept. 24 Catawba Catfish Club tournament on Lake Wateree, caught the big fish of the event in the process and added to their lead in the season point standings.
The Miller’s 3-fish limit of 97.8 pounds was worth $504. Their 33.8-pound fish was worth an extra $290.
George Lindsey and Damon Gibson took second with 66.2 pounds and won $315. Dean Birch and Barry Cannupp were third with 65.05 pounds, winning $189. Cary Vanden Broecke was fourth with 63.75 pounds, winning $126.
