NC certifies new Almaco jack record – again

Henry Barksdale poses with NC’s new state record Almaco jack.

Henry Barksdale of Sutherland, VA caught North Carolina’s new state record for Almaco Jack on Sept. 18. The previous record was caught earlier this year.

Barksdale caught the record fish, which weighed 60 pounds, 8 ounces, off of Hatteras, near the spot of the previous record, which was 56 pounds, 4.8 ounces.

Fishing with Capt. Shaun Dunn out of Teach’s Lair Marina, Barksdale caught the fish while using a jig, an Okuma Cedros rod and a Daiwa Saltist LD 50 reel with 80-pound braided line.

NC Division of Marine Fisheries staff weighed and confirmed the fish, which measured 46 inches fork lenth, and had a 32-inch girth, as the new state record.
