Tiger shark was 11+ feet long
Luke Hurley of Yadkinville, NC caught a huge tiger shark from the beach at Oak Island this fall. The shark may have broken the state record if he’d had it weighed, but Hurley had no intention of killing the shark.
The shark measured more than 11 feet in length, but Hurley didn’t get the exact length because they didn’t have a tape measure on the beach, and he wanted to release the shark quickly to ensure it was healthy.
Hurley was using an Avet 80W reel, spooled with 200 pound mono topshot, that was mounted on an 80-130 class custom rod. He was using the head of a cownose ray for bait, and kayaked it out about 250 yards to drop it. The fish hit at midnight and Hurley got it to the beach in 30 minutes for a couple of pictures.
The current NC state record tiger shark of 1150 pounds was caught at Oak Island in 1964 by Walter Maxwell.
