Inshore fishing produces multiple species in August

Even though August is one of the hottest months, Capt. Buddy Love with Captain Smiley Fishing Charters (843-361-7445) said a noticeable change takes place among fish in the Myrtle Beach area.

The fish sense the fall weather is on the way, and even though the air temperature is still scorching hot, the water temperature often begins slightly cooling down this month, triggering some awesome fishing in the Grand Strand.

Numerous options

“We catch just about everything inshore this month,” said Love. “Redfish, flounder, speckled trout, and black drum are all feeding. Some days, flounder bite best. Other days, redfish are the most aggressive.”

The flounder bite can be top notch. Love uses larger mud minnows as bait, and said flounder stay on the move a good bit.

“We usually catch them best on the falling tide. But the rising tide is pretty good too,” he said.

Redfish, speckled trout, and black drum are also very active, and feed heavily this month. Love said on some days, shrimp fished under a popping cork will catch all three species.

“This time of year, we catch a lot of smaller speckled trout. But if you hunt around a bit, you can usually find some bigger ones worth pursuing,” he said.

Towards the end of this month, the bite stays hot, with live shrimp under a popping cork catching both redfish and black drum. Love said anglers specifically targeting redfish will have more luck with finger mullet as bait. The last of the falling tide and first of the rising tide is usually best, especially around creek mouths with oysters.
