Pechmann Center hosting upcoming fishing seminars

Zakk Royce will be giving a seminar entitled "Fishing for North Carolina's Giant Catfish," at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville tomorrow evening.

Catfishing, kayak fishing, family fishing clinic all being offered this month

In December, Zakk Royce set the catfish world on fire, breaking the North Carolina state record for blue cats twice in less than 24 hours. He landed another catfish that surpassed the 100-pound mark a couple of months later, and has been catching his share of other blues that range anywhere from 25 to 75 pounds.

If you want to know Royce’s fishing secrets, he’ll be glad to share them with you, and if you’re free tomorrow evening, April 6, he will be doing just that at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville.

Royce’s seminar, entitled “Fishing for North Carolina’s Giant Catfish,” will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and he will cover a wide range of topics to help you catch your own fish-of-a-lifetime. Equipment selection will be one subject, where he will talk about rod and reel selection, line sizes, and terminal tackle such as hooks and swivels.

The Murfreesboro angler will also talk about catching and using bait, and about what type of structure to fish around, as well as techniques such as trolling and drifting to catch these big blues.

A kayak fishing seminar is also being offered at the Pechmann Fishing Education Center this weekend. This seminar will be taught by Capt. Jerry Dilsaver and Mark Patterson, both of whom are active members of the North Carolina Kayak Fishing Association. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dilsaver and Patterson will cover kayak safety and rigging, inshore kayak fishing, kayak fishing for mackerel, kayak fishing for bass, and basics of kayaking fishing for panfish like bluegill and crappie.

While no kayak fishing will take place at this event, participants will get the chance to test out a variety of popular fishing kayaks at Lake Rim, thanks to sponsors such as Hook, Line, and Paddle, of Wilington, the Southern Outdoorsman of Fayetteville, Hobie, and Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing group, which will serve burgers and hot dogs for a small donation.

On April 16, the Pechmann Fishing Education Center will also host a Family Fishing Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be hands-on workshop, and participants will be very active, learning to cast a spin-cast rod-and-reel, setting up a complete fishing outfit, basic fishing knots, collecting bait, practice catch-and-release properly, and handling fish correctly. They will also catch fish in the Education Center’s stocked ponds.

Thomas Carpenter, director of the Pechmann Center, stresses that this is a family event.

“We would like this workshop to be a fun family event and hope that parents and/or guardians will participate in the fishing activities along with their kids to enhance the learning experience and to start building those fishing memories,” said Carpenter.
