Circle or ‘J’ Hooks?

A simple circle-hook ballyhoo rig has been enough to catch plenty of blue marlin of all sizes.

There have been volumes written on which style of hook is better for blue marlin fishing, circle hooks or “J” hooks.

If you’re fishing a billfish tournament in the Atlantic, the choice is made; all natural baits must be rigged with circle hooks. Only lures (with no bait) can be rigged with traditional “J” hooks. Don’t let this rule scare you. Baits are actually easy to rig on circles hooks, and getting the fish hooked up is fairly simple as well, provided you give the fish long enough to eat the bait.

When you’re fun-fishing, the choice is up to you, however, there is mounting evidence that double-hook rigs can cause a lot of damage to fish. Most billfish captains will tell you that they have just as much success with single-hook rigs as doubles. Do the fish a favor and use either circle hooks or single-hook rigs.
