5 steps to rigging ballyhoo

Use this five-step method for rigging both weighted and unweighted baits for bluewater trolling.

You’ll need fresh ballyhoo, non-offset circle hook or 50-pound mono leader (6 feet), regular strength copper wire (12 inches), barrel swivel (No. 10, 35-pound), lead sinkers or an ounce of lead wire.

Remove waste and eyes. Baits will swim in more lifelike fashion once rigged. Insert the hook through head into gut and straighten the bait.

Wrap the wire behind the gill plate, across top of head and behind gill plate on opposite side. Thread through the eye, under chin and across top behind swivel.

Wrapping the bill closes the mouth. Break off the tag end of the bill. Thread sinker onto wire under the bait’s chin if weighted.
