Spots, pompano, blues, pups hit at Bogue Pier

The first scattered fall spot runs have begun at Bogue Inlet Pier.

“We’ve had a couple of good spot runs, mostly after Hurricane Irene passed, and we had some clear water,” said pier worker Herb Hill. “They’ve hit occasionally since then.”

On Thursday, Sept. 28, pier anglers were landing sea mullet, pompanos, hogfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.

“Most of the spots and sea mullet are being caught on bottom rigs with live and artificial bloodworms, Fish Bites and fish strips in pea green, chartreuse and pink,” Hill said.

The blues and Spanish are smacking Gotcha plugs twitched rapidly with an underhand spinning reel retrieve back to the pier.

A week ago the pier witnessed several days of excellent bluefishing with Taylor blues averaging 12 to 15 inches in length and some larger fish.

“After the hurricane we had a lot of bait in the water, but the storm after that muddied the water up and fishing has been a little slower,” Hill said.

Anglers also have caught a few puppy drum in the 5-pound range along with a few throw-back flounder.

“We lost 230 feet at the end of the pier, our king-fishing area, to Irene,” Hill said. “We only had one king caught all year off this pier, which was a strange year.”

Plans are to begin rebuilding the end of Bogue Inlet Pier after the popular fishing platform closes the Monday after Thanksgiving.
