Speck weighed 11 pounds, 11 ounces

Conner Mills of Greenville, NC caught a giant speckled trout from a creek off the Pamlico Sound on Jan. 6 that almost set a new North Carolina state record. His speck weighed 11 pounds, 11 ounces, and measured 33 1/8 inches long.

“It was a very rainy day,” said Mills. “It started off warm, and cooled off as the day went on.”

He made numerous casts that didn’t draw any strikes, but he didn’t get discouraged.

“I fished multiple times with no luck. Then right at last light, I gave it one more go,” he said. “I caught the fish right around 4:45 p.m.”

Mills was using a lure that most every speckled trout angler has in their tackle box.

“I’d been fishing with my trusty MirrOlure 17MR all day, and that was my only catch,” he said.

The 17MR is a 2 5/8-inch suspending twitchbait that features a wide flash and darting side-to-side action that mimics the movement of a wounded baitfish.

“I guess I was just in the right place at the right time, with the right fish,” he said.

He was surprised by the size of the fish, and said he didn’t realize how big it was until he got it in the net.

“All glory goes to God,” he said.
