Sling bling at ling

Cobia are attracted to brightly-colored lures like this bucktail.

A cobia by any other name — they’re also known as lemonfish and ling — still looks like a big, brown catfish. He may be ugly, but he likes his “bling.”

They are especially turned on by bright colors that imitate crabs, so anglers should sling lures that have showy colors to attract the most strikes.

A 2- to 3-ounce red jighead tied with bright orange bucktail or artificial fiber is the ticket to wooing a cobia. The jig’s attractiveness is improved by adding a soft-plastic trailer. Try trailers with molded-in sparkles and glitter in greens, reds, yellows, oranges and blues. A big hook is important to a solid hookup. Anglers can grind or sand weight from the bottom of a 4-ounce or larger jig to have a larger hook size combined with a lighter weight jig.

To further enhance a jig’s attractiveness, daub on some Carolina Lunker Sauce or other crab scent. Adding a strip of squid instead of a plastic trailer is another way to add scent.
