Rub-a-dub drum

A rubber landing net will speed up the process of returning a red drum to the water, as well as better protect its slime coat from abrasion than a woven nylon net.

Using a rubber net to land red drum helps prevent injury to the fish and saves fishing time. Other important pieces of gear include a mushroom anchor and a carbon-fiber push pole.

When a fish is hooked, the angler with the pole puts it down and eases the mushroom anchor over the side, silently stopping the boat. The fish is landed with the net and the hook removed from the fish. The anglers take photos and release the fish quickly with little damage to its slime coat.

A polypropylene or nylon woven net is more abrasive to the fish, and a hook can imbed in the mesh; a hook that snags in rubber mesh merely falls free, saving the fish from injury and from excessive time out of the water. It also saves the anglers the fishing time that would have been lost in freeing free the hook from a woven net.
