Fishing nearshore reefs offers a lot of fun and excitement for beginning anglers. They are full of a variety of species that are both exciting to catch and great table fare.
“If you just want to catch fish and don’t care what you catch, then the reefs are the place to do it,” said guide Robert McCarley.
Dropping a weighted fresh shrimp on a 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook will provide plenty of action.
“If the bait hits the bottom it won’t stay there long.” McCarley said. “Something will eat it — exactly what is unknown.”
Around nearshore reefs, everything from black sea bass to amberjacks and sharks will bite, and the clear water and fast action makes many of those opportunities well worth the ride.
When fishing for a mixed bag around reefs, heavy tackle is a must — spinning rods 7 feet long with reels spooled with 30- to 50-pound braid are a minimum.
