On Saturday, May 24, the Outer Banks Fishing School will feature a full day of specialized instruction on local techniques, tactics and locations for catching cobia amberjack and king mackerel.
The day’s instruction will begin at 8:30 A.M. and continue until 4:30 P.M. and will feature information presented by Capt. Lee Johnson, Capt. Mark Peters, Capt. Jason Peters and Nathan Pruitt. Participants will learn where these popular species can be found, several methods to produce outstanding catches and much peripheral knowledge, such as knots, using marine electronics and other information critical to enjoying good and productive fishing.
Capt. Lee Johnson, Gouger Charters, will cover sight casting and chumming for monster cobia, live baiting and jigging for amberjack, plus live baiting and trolling for king mackerel. Capt. Johnson will also present methods and information on trolling for bluefish, and Spanish mackerel.
Captain Mark Peters will discuss modern fishing lines, including technology and products for different applications.
Nathan Pruitt, the custom rod builder and rigging pro at TW’s Tackle will conduct two sessions. The first will be a knot tying workshop to learn a few “must know” knots and the second will discuss the new Shimano Butterfly Jigs and several techniques for using them successfully.
Other topics will include rigs, rods, reels, line, hardware, wire, rigging, live baits, planers, spoons, lures, butterfly and other jigging techniques. There will also be discussions on ocean structure such as the NC Artificial reefs, The Navy Towers, “Graveyard of the Atlantic” shipwreck GPS locations and techniques for getting the most from your depth sounder.
The Instructors
Capt. Mark Peters—Seminar Moderator
In addition to being the seminar moderator, Mark Peters is the business manager and owner of the Outer Banks Fishing School. He is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain and a multiengine, instrument rated, land and seaplane pilot. He is also a PADI certified scuba diver.
Capt. Mark has had a passion for fishing all his life and he began fishing the Outer Banks surf as a teenager. Having operated a private boat in the Outer Banks for over two decades, he knows the sound and ocean waters well. He enjoys spending time on his boat, Noyzboyz, and usually can be found on the water fishing the sounds, the nearshore ocean, the Gulf Stream, or in the surf.
Capt. Lee Johnson—Nearshore and Inshore Ocean Fishing
Capt. Lee is a third generation captain with twenty years experience fishing out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. His love of freshwater, saltwater, inshore, and offshore fishing has been an important part of his entire life. Fishing has taken him to the waters of Venezuela, Mexico, St. Thomas, the Caribbean, Florida, and Texas where he has honed his expertise and skill to become a consistent top finisher in a variety of fishing tournaments.
Capt. Lee currently operates “Gouger” charters where he offers nearshore ocean and sound charters. He is looking forward to sharing his fishing knowledge and experience with participants of The Outer Banks Fishing School.
Capt. Jason Peters—Assistant Instructor
Capt. Jason is an Eagle Scout and an accomplished saltwater angler. He has been a PADI Certified Scuba Diver since he was thirteen and at the age of eighteen earned his U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. Jason is an avid outdoorsman with over seven hundred miles of backpacking the wilderness, including summiting Mt. Rainier.
Capt. Jason is a student at Christopher Newport University where he is an Environmental Sciences major with a strong interest in Marine Biology. He has been fishing in the Outer Banks since he could hold a rod and is passionate about sharing his love and knowledge of the sport. He has worked at TW’s Bait and Tackle and as a mate aboard several of the Oregon Inlet charter boats. He has also served as an observer for several tournaments.
Nathan Pruitt—Custom Rigging and Specialized Techniques
Nathan builds custom rods and is the rigging specialist at TW’s Bait and Tackle. He has years of experience in both fields and spends most of his “off time” fishing in some way. He is excited about sharing his knowledge, especially regarding the new techniques for fishing with butterfly jigs.

There is a registration fee for the OBX Fishing Schools. The fee is $125 until two weeks before the event when it increases to $150. The May 24 school will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.
