Loco Baitfish is a local favorite

Mark Nutting’s Loco Baitfish is a sparsely tied cobia fly that has a lot of natural movement in the water.

Mark Nutting not only guides professionally, he also ties flies commercially. His favorite fly for cobia is a creation of his own, the Loco Baitfish.

“I use materials in this fly that have a lot of movement so I am not forced to strip the fly fast to get the attention of a cobia” he said.

The recipe for the fly is: a 2/0 Big Game hook, 210 Denier thread, Finnish raccoon tail, Marabou body feathers, an EP Stream Brush head, and 3D holographic eyes.

When tying this fly Nutting likes to keep the material fairly sparse and concentrates on a correct profile.

“The key is natural movement,” he said. “Packing material in too tight is a mistake many rookies make, and all they end up with is something that looks like a blob of fur in the water that no fish will eat.”
