Light tackle for anglers new to redfish

A medium-weight spinning outfit spooled with 12-pound mono or 15- to 20-pound braided line is perfect for slot-sized winter redfish.

Most Lowcountry anglers target redfish at some time during the year, but many do so with live or cut bait and heavy tackle.

For those who would like to transition to the exciting and somewhat more challenging field of redfish on artificials, a very good and reasonably priced outfit would include a mediumweight, 6 1/2-foot spinning rod similar to Bass Pro Shops’ IM6 or IM7 Graphite Series and an open-faced spinning reel like the Shimano Saros 2500F. This lighter outfit is quite sufficient for taming any of our inshore redfish that rarely exceed 31 inches long. Some experts still prefer spooling their reels with 12-pound monofilament, but many now opt for 15 to 20-pound Power Pro braided line, which boasts the same diameter as 6-pound mono, which allows added casting distance.

Most commonly, anglers thread a Gulp! or Bass Assassin Sea Shad trailer behind a 1/4-ounce chartreuse or red jighead when casting to redfish.
