Big flounder, as well as limits of these fish, are showing up for anglers across North Carolina's coast.

Big flounder measured 28.5 inches in length

Jason Ceisner of Raleigh, N.C. caught a huge flounder while fishing at Carolina Beach this past Sunday, Aug. 16. The fish was 28.5 inches long and weighed 10 pounds, 11 ounces.

Ceisner was using a live finger mullet for bait, and fishing it on a Carolina rig.

The double-digit fish was a welcome sight for Ceisner. In North Carolina, the species went out of season last fall, and stayed out until this past weekend. Lots of anglers have spent the past few days making up for lost time, and Ceisner was certainly among those. A 10+ pound flounder is a feat in any year, but especially nice after a prolonged closure of the fishery.

Josh Turbeville barely missed double digits on the doormat he gigged Monday night. After purchasing a walking gig at Chasin’ Tails Outdoors, he set off wading the shallows around Atlantic Beach. He promptly gigged a 9.87-pounder. The folks at Chasin’ Tails said it’s the largest one they’ve weighed so far.

Limits of flounder keeping anglers happy

It’s not just super-sized flounder that are showing up for anglers. Numerous folks have caught their daily limit over the past few days. And that goes for anglers fishing nearshore reefs, inshore waters, from the piers, and from the beaches, especially in the Outer Banks area.

Mud minnows are catching a lot of the flounder, but Neuse River Bait and Tackle reports plenty of catches on 2-ounce Spro bucktails as well. Gulp! soft plastics are also producing well.

The recreational harvest season for flounder runs through Sept. 30. Guides like Capt. Jot Owens expect the flounder bite to remain hot — and get even better — as we move into September.
