Cobia season starts next Friday

2020 cobia season opens May 1

For North Carolina anglers, cobia season starts May 1, 2020. The season continues through the end of the year, and by all accounts, 2020 should be a good year. The recreational limit allows one fish per person, per day, with a boat limit of two per day, if at least two anglers are onboard, during the month of May only. From June 1 through Dec. 31, private boats must abide by the one fish rule, no matter how many people are onboard.

For charter boats, however, the daily limit will be one fish per angler, up to four anglers. So a charter boat may keep up to a maximum of four cobia per day. Shore-bound or pier anglers can keep one per day.

The minimum size length for the species is 36 inches, measured from the nose to the fork of the tail (fork length).

Cobia are a popular species in the Carolinas. These fish come inshore in the spring and stick around for a few months, and spend a good deal of time around nearshore reefs and structure. Check out the video to see what it’s like to fish for cobia.
