Bear Island ponds are tops

Ponds on Bear Island WMA are managed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and provide great fishing for freshwater and saltwater species alike.

Bear Island Wildlife Management Area is situated between the Ashepoo River and the Edisto River. Located in Green Pond, the WMA has more than a dozen freshwater and brackish ponds that are open to fishing from April 1 to Sept. 30, making May a prime time to fish.

A variety of freshwater and saltwater species inhabit these ponds, which are heavily managed. The water is kept at premium levels thanks to floodgates that allow water to come in and out of the Ashepoo River.

Bear Island is known nationally as a bird watcher’s paradise, so fishing isn’t the main focus of most visitors — a plus for anglers.

Fishing is only allowed during daylight hours, and a saltwater recreational fishing license is required.
