Bait for big-boy drum

Steaks cut from fresh or frozen mullet are among the preferred baits to soak on the bottom for adult red drum in the Neuse River.

Catching or buying bait big red drum cruising in the Neuse River is not difficult. They will eat any kind of fish cut into chunks or steaks and will strike small whole or live fish, including menhaden.

Mullet are among the easiest baitfish to obtain and use, because they can be caught with cast nets or purchased at seafood markets and tackle shops.

Mullet steaks are preferred because the fish can be frozen if fresh bait cannot be found and are substantial enough to stay on the hook for a long soak despite the presence of bait-stealers such as crabs and croakers.
