White bass spawning run at full swing out of Lake Greenwood

Ultralight tackle, inline spinners and grubs are the ticket for often-overlooked fish

Lake Greenwood’s white bass are making their annual migration up the Saluda and Reedy rivers, and fishermen are catching limits from the mouth of those rivers as far up as navigable water will allow.

Ultra light tackle has been the norm for successful fishermen. Inline spinners and white grubs have been the ticket. Most fishermen are using eighth-ounce spinners and white curlytails on eighth-ounce jigheads.

White bass are an often overlooked game fish in lakes across South Carolina’s Midlands and Piedmont, but few fish fight as hard and are as fun on ultralight tackle. Most reservoirs of the piedmont hold catchable populations of white bass, and their spawning migration is pretty much the same on all of the reservoirs of the midlands.

Greenwood and Wateree have notable spring runs that last a few weeks before ending abruptly when the spawn is over. Anglers looking to take advantage of these fish will need to hit the waters now.
