Guide Richard Andrews uses a unique way to create a weedless jighead for fishing creeks along the lower Roanoke River that are infested with bottom snags, usually cypress knees.
“You’re gonna lose some jigs fishing for stripers, that’s a given, so I wanted a jighead that didn’t get hung up so much,” he said.
Originally designed for bass, the oval-shaped Mission Fishing jighead features a worm hook attached to an eyelet that allows the hook — and soft-plastic lure — to swivel 180 degrees.
“It gives the lure a lot more movement,” said Andrews, who pushes the barb of the hook through the body of the soft-plastic lure, usually a Z-Man StreakZ that has a length-wise channel running through it. The hook’s tip is covered by the sides of the lure’s body, making it almost snagproof.
“I don’t want stripers pulling my lures off the hook, so I cut a 1/2-inch piece of No. 12 offshore wire and push that through the hook eyelet and the nose of the lure,” Andrews said. “It’s hard for fish to pull a jig off rigged this way.”
