Secret flathead device

Van Hughes swears his catfish ‘clunker’ will attract catfish at night when action is slow.

Guide Van Hughes said he discovered a trick that helps him catch flathead catfish.

“These English guys used a thing called a ‘clunker’ to bring wels catfish, which can weigh more than 200 pounds … to them,” he said.

A clunker is curved piece of plastic, 18 inches long, with one end shaped like a concave oval, 2 inches in diameter. An angler plunges the end into the water to make a thumping sound that, Hughes said, attracts catfish at night.

“Most people don’t believe me, but I’ve been fishing at night and not catching anything, and I’d douse the end of a clunker in the water several times,” he said. “That sound attracted catfish.”

Hughes has seen a YouTube video from Europe that captured photos of huge wels catfish swimming under a boat after a fisherman used a clunker.

“I know there are a lot of skeptics out there, but the clunker works for me,” he said. “I’ve been using it for four or five years now.”

Hughes pauses two or three seconds between each douse of the clunker in the water.
