Rubber nets won’t rub fish the wrong way

Andrew Tubbs nets a Thurmond Lake striper for Justin Marsh with a rubber-coated landing net.

A rubber net is one of the best pieces of gear to conserve fish and fishing time.

Every minute a bait is in the water, it could be tempting a striper or hybrid to strike. Hooks can penetrate the uncoated mesh of a standard monofilament or nylon net, and sinkers and leaders may become so entangled that the angler must cut the line or leader to free them.

Hooks will not penetrate rubber mesh and sinkers and lines are easy to extract. The rubber also does less damage to a fish’s slime coat, helping any striper caught that must be released to survive in the hot water temperatures of summer.

The daily bag limit for hybrids and stripers on Thurmond Lake is 10 fish, with only three fish greater than 26 inches, so it is quite possible that anglers will have to release some large stripers in a day of fishing.
