Randleman’s rules of the road

Tom Siler caught this crappie under the NC 62 bridge — which divides Randleman Lake into areas where powerboats are and are not allowed.

Randleman Regional Reservoir has many rules for use due to its use as a water-supply reservoir. These are summarized on the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority website.

The lake is open Wednesday through Sunday, plus July 2-3, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from June 1-Aug. 31. Hours vary during other months. The lake is closed in January and February.

At the PTRWA boat ramp the powerboat fee is $15, plus $5 for each person exceeding three. Launching kayaks, canoes or paddleboats costs $5, and pier fishing costs $5. Bank fishing is prohibited.

Boats may not touch the shoreline shore except in designated places.

Powerboats are restricted to 100 per day in the powerboat area below the NC 62 Bridge. There are no restrictions on boat numbers in the non-powerboat area above the NC 62 Bridge.

Boats must register and check out at the ramp check station. A fishing permit is required and is available at the check station.

The speed limit is 25 mph, except in no-wake zones, where it is 5 mph.

All boats must be off the water 30 minutes before designated closing time.

All anglers’ catches are subject to inspection by the lake warden.

No fueling of boats on or within 200 feet of the lake. The minimum age to operate a boat is 16.

All boats must have a sanitary waste pail with a lid.

At the Guilford County Southwest Park, canoe, kayak and johnboat rentals are available. Trolling motors with batteries are also available. A johnboat with a trolling motor rents for $40 per day. Other fees apply to private and rental paddle craft at the park marina.
