Obtaining boat permits

The four Spartanburg County water-district reservoirs produce some great crappie fishing, but all require permits and have boat and/or motor size restrictions.

All of these water-district lakes have boat and motor restrictions, with permits available for each boat based on it’s horsepower classification. Special boating permits are also required to use the facilities. Rules, regulations, and requirements can be found by calling the lake warden’s office or viewing the district’s website online.

The Spartanburg Water System and Sewer District permits several different classes of motorized boats on either Lake Blalock or Lake Bowen or offers a combination permit for both. Spartanburg County residents get a substantial break on the permit fees, which range from $65 to $250 per year. For a schedule of permit fees on either a daily or seasonal basis, visit http://www.spartanburgwater.org/

Following suit, SJWD offers either a single lake or combination permit to access its lakes; Spartanburg residents also get a substantial break on fees. Rates are based on motor size and residency, with the lowest annual combination fee being $40 for Spartanburg residents and $120 for in-state residents. A full schedule of fees and other information can be found at http://www.sjwd.com/.
