The Waccamaw silverside, known to locals as a “skipjack minnow” is a forage fish native to Lake Waccamaw and a favorite food for the lake’s white perch.

This Waccamaw silverside or skipjack minnow is only native to Lake Waccamaw and the Waccamaw River and is a primary prey species for white perch and other game fish. They can form dense schools when white perch force them to the top, attracting seagulls and other birds to the easy feast.

Anglers should watch the water surface for leaping schools of these minnows as well as the bubble trails left by feeding perch. Keeping an eye on the sky for diving birds can clue anglers to the presence of perch, especially on windy days when the water is too rippled for them to see the fish.
