Locating isolated ponds

Small, out-of-the-way ponds are often some of the best for targeting bream or shellcrackers with a fly rod.

Fishing on smaller Upstate lakes such as Bowen, Cunningham, Robinson and Cooley is always a good choice, but you will find more competition for the fishing than on remote ponds.

Ponds can be located by scanning topographical maps, GoogleMaps and other resources; if they’re not on public land, be sure to get permission from the owner.

Sometimes a new pond may turn out to be a bust; it may be too shallow to support a good fish population. But sometimes, you hit a real gem. It is a lot of fun to bushwhack into a new pond and be one of a small number to ever fish there. Fortunately for the more adventurous among us, many anglers are often too lazy or not curious enough to investigate these hidden gems.

A number of small ponds along the Saluda River in Greenville County support good populations of fish. In addition, the river also contains some good fishing, but it can be quite muddy during rainy weather. The ponds tend to remain clearer, and a little tint to the water is not a bad thing.
