Fishing bridges is a priority in March

A dedicated walkway across Dutchman Creek offers anglers without boats a great spot to catch Lake Wateree crappie.

Numerous bridges cross Lake Wateree’s tributary creeks, and while some of them do not permit fishing from the actual structure because of safety reasons, some do have designated areas for fishermen. One, across Dutchman’s Creek, has a specific walkway built just for bridge fishermen. Fishing by day is good as well as is fishing at night under the lights.

Chuck Porter, a veteran Lake Wateree fisherman, said the bridge is usually lined with fishermen day and night during March. Porter said he’ll often arrive early and not leave until dark, and he sees plenty of people fishing the bridges day and night.

“Crappies are on the move during March, and at night, fishermen will use lights to attract the fish,” he said. “By day, just fishing near the pilings is effective, as crappies are moving and the bridges form a bit of a funnel for concentrating them. This gives fishermen who don’t have access to a boat a prime place to catch a string of crappie during March.”
