Cast-netting for perch

Cast nets, even in small-mesh sizes, need to be relatively heavy to drop fast enough to envelope baitfish or white perch.

As of Aug. 1, it is no longer illegal to keep white perch caught in a cast net west of I-95, as they have been considered invasive and often damage the population of other species. That’s a win-win situation for fishermen.

Guide Greg Griffin incidentally catches white perch in his cast net while searching for the shad he uses for bait on Shearon Harris Lake. His secret to successful cast-netting is location and a great cast net. His choice is the “Bait Buster”, a 9-foot model made by Lee Fisher Nets. What makes this series unique is a hand-woven, six-panel design that ensures a full spread and most important, 1 1/2 pounds of lead per radius foot. Most nets average about a pound per radius foot.

The extra weight drops the net like a stone, even in smaller mesh sizes. Although it will take practice to become proficient, it is ideal for deep targets, and it will certainly be a perch buster once it’s legal.
