Add a cricket to your Beetle for early season redbreast sunfish

Billy Garner of Ridgeville took this nice stringer of Edisto River redbreast sunfish by adding a live cricket to the hook on his Beetle Spin, a trick that works especially well early in the spring.

The Johnson Beetle Spin is tough to beat when fishing for redbreast. Billy Garner of Ridgeville is a big fan of this lure, but he adds a little something to them this time of year: a live cricket.

“Especially early in the month, when the water hasn’t warmed up much, adding a live cricket is the trick. It will out fish a plain Beetle Spin 10-to-1 on most days this time of year,” he said.

“The rest of the year, it doesn’t seem to make a difference, but the added action, smell and displacement of the lure with the cricket on it is important,” he said.

Garner said adding the cricket also entices strikes immediately as the lure hits the water.

“A lot of times, the fish will hit it before I even begin my retrieve, as long as there is a cricket on it,” he said.
