Five bites enough for Brunson in BFL

Linwood's Todd Shoaf teamed with Lexington’s Gary Cline to finish second and win big-fish honors at the July 19 National Bass Circuit tournament on High Rock Lake.

Salisbury’s Spence Brunson won the June 27 Wal-Mart BFL North Carolina Division tournament on High Rock Lake with a 5-fish limit that weighed 22 pounds, one ounce. Brunson, who won $4,428, topped a field of 127 fishermen despite getting only five bites on crankbaits and having a 7-pound bass drive a No. 2 treble hook deep into his thumb during the tournament.

Lexington’s David Wright had only three crankbait bites, but the strikes came from an 8-pound bass, another bass over seven pounds, and a third fish pushing five pounds for a total of 20-03, good enough for second place and $2,214. His 8-pounder was worth $635 as the day’s big fish.

Other top fishermen were: Rob Digh of Denver, third, with 18-08 for $1,478; Bruce Bowman of Winston-Salem, fourth, with 17-15 for $1,033; Chris Brown of Welcome, fifth, with 17-14 for $886; Danny Haire of Yadkinville, sixth, with 17-13 for $812; Tommy Ireland of Hamptonville, seventh, with 17-08 for $738; Shane Floyd of Linwood, eighth, with 17-02 for $664, and Eric Rothrock of High Point and Roger Fulk of Clemmons, tied for ninth, with 17 pounds, each winning $553.50.

Richard Bradford of Hoffman placed first among the co-anglers with 15-4, banking $2,214.

Other co-angler scores were: Andy Kearns of High Point, second, with 14-06 for $1,107; Jamie Denison of Winston-Salem, third, with 14-03 for $738; Mark Murphy of Lexington, fourth, with 13-05 for $517; and David Jackson Wright of Mooresville, fifth, with 12-14 for $443.

Basspack: National champs!

Will White and Chris Wood had a final-day weight of 14.43 pounds to give N.C. State the championship at the July 10-12 Under Armour College Bass National Championship on the Arkansas River.

White and Wood fished a bridge over Fourche Creek for their big catch, which easily outdistanced the second-place stringer of 6.23 pounds posted by North Texas University.

The N.C. State team had catches of 4.97 pounds and 9.57 pounds the first two days to qualify for the final round.

In late June, the Basspack finished fifth in the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division tournament on the Potomac River. Kevin Beverly of Fuquay-Varina and Ben Dzwulski of Woodbine, Md., led the Wolfpack.
