Wright cranks up another victory

Lexington’s David Wright cranked his way to victory at the July 8 Bassmaster Weekend Series N.C. Division tournament at High Rock Lake.

Wright’s five-fish catch totaled 19.35 pounds and was anchored by a 5.09-pound bass. He earned $1,872 plus a $1,000 bonus from Mercury.

Winston-Salem’s Steve Sink placed second with 18.17 pounds, and his big fish weighed 5.42 pounds. Sink banked $936.

Chris Richey of Hickory ranked third with 15.46 pounds for $624; LaddWhicker of Winston-Salem took fourth with 15.10 pounds for $437; and Eric Rothrock of High Point placed fifth with 13.97 pounds for $374.

C. Mark Williams of Taylorsville took the big-fish prize of $165 with a 5.70-pound bass.

Hickory’s George Bost won the division for non-boaters with 10.62 pounds and received $908.

Other non-boaters results included Rick McCrary of Lexington, second, with 10.17 for $454; James Marshall, third, with 9.76 for $303; Kerry Murphy of Mooresville, fourth, with 8.71 for $292; Michael Branch, fifth, with 7.42 for $182; and Tom O’Neal, sixth, with 7.34 for $166.

Murphy had the big fish among non-boaters with a 5.32-pound bass that paid $80.

Three North Carolinians earned checks at the July 12-15 Champion’s Choice Bassmaster Elite Series tournament at Lake Champlain, Plattsburg, N.Y.

They were Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, 10th, with 64-02 for $13,500; Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, 17th, with 47-01 for $10,500; and Marty Stone of Lindner, 49th, with 39-00 for $10,000.

Tar Heel fishermen placed in four of the top five spots at the July 1 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament at Kerr Lake.

Lexington’s Robert Walser finished second with 17-09 for $2,598; Wake Forest’s Jimmy Porter placed third with 14-12 for $1,733; Durham’s Christopher Burns ranked fourth with 14-07 for $1,213; and Fayetteville’s Scott Mooneyham claimed fifth with 13-10 for $1,039.

Bowman Gray of Winterville finished second among the co-anglers with 9-15 and earned $1,280.

Eric Christian of Burlington won the co-angler big-bass prize of $395 with a 5-pound, 12-ounce fish.

Myers earned $10,000 for his 36th-place finish at the June 21-24 Bassmaster Elite Series Sooner Run tournament at Grand Lake, Grove, Okla. His catch totaled 42-07.

Wolak finished 21st with 36-08 and won $10,250 at the July 19-22 Bassmaster Elite Series Empire Chase tournament at Lake Erie, Buffalo, N.Y. Kevin Langill of Terrell ranked 37th with 33-14 and received $10,000.

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., won the first-place prize of $109,000 with 65-07.
