Viking 62 leads Big Rock with 680-pound blue marlin

Four boats bring billfish to scales on first day of 57th annual tournament

Fishermen brought four blue marlin to the Morehead City dock’s scales on Monday, the first day of the 57th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, and at the end fishing, a 680-pound billfish was leading the way.

The Viking 62, captained by Brian Komer, brought the 680-pound blue marlin to the scales after hooking up at 9:18 a.m. to take the lead. Three other fish came to the scales in the hunt for the lion’s share of the $1.63 million purse.

Shenandoah, captained by Alan Willis, came in shortly after 5:00 p.m. with a 503.6-pound catch, third best of the day, but worth $365,500 in the Level VII Fabulous Fisherman contest, being the first to come in with a fish weighing 500 pounds or more. Viking 62 did not enter that portion of the tournament.

Capt. Will Ross of the Carly A brought to the scales a 504.3-pound blue marlin at 6:04 p.m. to take second place.

The fourth blue caught belonged to Capt. Gregg Middleton’s Callie Girl, a 481.2-pound fish weighed in at 2:34 p.m.

The field of 149 boats caught 14 blue marlin, 10 white marlin and a sailfish on Monday.
