Pope captures BFL title at Murray

Shane Floyd (pictured) and Tony Garitta, both of Lexington, won the March 4 New Piedmont Team Tournament at Badin Lake with 21.33 pounds. Their biggest bass weighed 6.88 pounds.

Roger Pope of Statesville won the March 10 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division tournament at Lake Murray, S.C., with a five-bass catch weighing 22 pounds, 7 ounces . Pope received $4,691 and a bonus of $827 from Ranger boats.

Among the co-anglers, James Freeman of Gastonia finished third with 13-2 and earned $911, and Jeff Penland of Leicester ranked fifth with 13-0 and banked $591.

Penland was also the co-angler big-fish winner with a 6 -pound, 9-ounce bass worth $437.

Two Tar Heel fishermen finished in the money at the March 15-17 Bassmaster Central Open at Lake Texoma, Texas.

Dave Wolak of Wake Forest placed third with 35-10 and earned $10,000; Pat Golden of High Point ranked 11th with 29-13 and received $3,500.

A field of 240 boats fished the March 10 Cast Out Cancer Jim Ledbetter Memorial Bass Tournament at Lake Norman. The event raised more than $35,000 for cancer research.

The Kannapolis team of Rodney Adams and Mike Powel won the competition with 14.58 pounds and shared $3,200. They also claimed the big-fish award of $1,428 with a 5.29-pound bass.

Mark Carpenter and Shane Lineberger of Lincolnton placed second with 13.81 pounds and received $1,600.

“Boots” Beasley of Mooresville and David Johnson of Lincolnton ranked third with 13.79 pounds and won $800. They also took the Seniors Team award of $500.

Kevin Langill of Terrell finished 37th with 54-15 and won $10,000 at the March 8-11 Battle on the Border tournament, Lake Amistad, Del Rio, Texas.

Lexington’s David Wright placed second with 15-15 and won $3,000 at the March 3 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament at Kerr Lake.

Van Murray of Raleigh won the Boater Division big-bass award with a 6-pound, 9-ounce fish worth $1,000.

Bahama’s Phillip Eakes was the highest-placing Ranger Cup contingency participant and received a $500 bonus.

Jason Houchins of Woodbridge, Va., took the top prize of $5,100 with a five-fish catch totaling 17-01.

Bryan Hastings of Littleton topped the Co-angler Division with 17-13 and earned $3,000.

Allen Haigh of Prospect Hill finished third among the co-anglers with 14-14 for $1,000.

Clayton’s Milton Lockamy Jr. captured the co-angler big-bass prize of $500 with a 6-pound, 10-ounce bass.

Linden’s Marty Stone placed 34th with 18-12 and Wake Forest’s Mark Lamb ranked 37th with 18-01 at the March 1-3 Bassmaster Southern Open at the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, Fla. Each angler received $1,000.

Pam Martin-Wells won the inaugural Feb. 22-24 Women’s Bassmaster Tour Championship at Lake Mitchell, Ala., with 38-07 and received $10,000 in cash and a Triton boat and Mercury motor.
