3 blue marlin boated, 12 other blue marlin released
Day One of the 2016 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament out of Morehead City is in the books, and by all accounts, it was a successful day, capped by a blue marlin that tipped the scales at over 560 pounds, which won over $433,000 for the Marlin Gull.
A total of three blue marlin were boated and brought to the scales. The Sandbob brought in a 476.2-pound blue, and the James Joyce II hauled a 418 pounder to the dock. The Marlin Gull’s which weighed 564.8 pounds, was the Fabulous Fisherman Level Winner.
William McSpadden was the angler who brought in the big fish for the Marlin Gull, which was captained by Kenny Midget.
It was the Sandbob, captained by Norm Welter, that drew first blood, as they were the first to the scales with their 476.2 pounder that was boated by angler Todd Nunn.
The James Joyce II, captained by Troy Pate III, brought in their 418 pounder which was caught by angler Jim Steward.
On top of those three trophy fish, a total of 12 blue marlin were released. The following boats all came in with upside-down blue marlin flags, signifying their releases:
Bankwalker, Syked Out, Free Style, Royal Flush, Marlin Fever, Catbaby, Delta Dawn, Pelagic, Energizer, 18 Reeler, Compromise, Islander.
Three sailfish were also released, from the following boats:
Sea Creature, Energizer, Syked Out.
A total of 174 boats are registered for the 58th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, and 105 fished today, with the remaining 69 choosing today as their off day. Things crank up again tomorrow at 9 a.m., with anglers expected back at the dock by 3 p.m.
