Harwood wins BFL at Clarks Hill

Walter Church holds the 1.42-pound crappie that helped him and Greg Bentley take first place at the Feb. 18 Carolina Crappie Team Tournament at Badin Lake.

Steve Harwood of Weaverville won the Feb. 18 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Savannah Division tournament at Clarks Hill Lake, Ga. Harwood’s haul of 16-10 paid $5,204.

David G. Williams of Maiden finished second with 15-04 and received $2,512.

Bryson City’s Mike Winchester placed fifth with 15-04 and collected $1,005.

Chad Silver of Leicester ranked fifth among co-anglers with 8-12 and earned $502.

Artie Phillips of Monroe placed fifth at the Feb. 18 Stren Series Southeast Division tournament at West Point Lake, Ga. His catch of 12 pounds, 12 ounces paid $7,500.

Other Tar Heels in the money were Williams, 23rd, and Flash Butts of Roanoke Rapids, 34th, each receiving $1,600; Bryan Thrift of Shelby, 31st, Chris Baumgardner of Gastonia, 36th, and Scott Hamrick of Denver, 37th, each receiving $1,000.

Nick Kelley of Brownsville, Tenn., and Paydon Hibdon of Stover, Mo., won the Feb. 18-18, Junior Bassmaster World Championship in their respective age divisions at the Harris Chain of Lakes, Leesburg, Fla.

Each received a $5,000 college scholarship, a Triton boat and Mercury motor.

Garrett Smith of Pinehurst and Westley Riddle of Sanford each finished ninth in their respective age divisions.

The event was held in conjunction with the Basssmaster Family Fest as part of the Bassmaster Classic week activities.
