Catawba angler makes Classic

Amy and Bobby Workman of Burlington won first place with this 11.65-pound striper at the Jan. 13 Tarheel Club tournament at High Rock.

Six anglers, including Brent Long of Catawba, realized their dream by qualifying for the 2007 Bassmaster Classic through the Jan. 17-19 Bass Federation Nation Championship at Alabama’s Lake Neely Henry.

Others include Royce Dennington of Oklahoma, winner of the Central Division; Long, winner of the Southern Division; Shigeru Tsukiyama of Japan, winner of the Western Division; Kevin Waterman of Maryland, winner of the Mid-Atlantic Division; Chris Novack of Connecticut, winner of the Eastern Division; and Terry McWilliams of Indiana; winner of the Northern Division.

Dennington won the individual competition with 43 pounds to top 53 other amateur anglers, edging out Long by 2 ounces.

In addition to the Classic invitation, Dennington received a spot in the Bassmaster Elite Series, $15,000 in cash, and a Triton boat , and a guaranteed spot in the Bassmaster Open Division of his choice.

Bryan Thrift of Shelby had the Purolator big bass for Day 1 with a 5-pound, 10-ounce fish and finished second to Long in the Southern Division.

Michael Fox of Statesville and Brian Morgan of Newton won the Dec. 16 Ryan Newman Foundation Celebrity Charity Fishing Tournament at Lake Norman. They received a 519 VX Ranger boat and Yamaha motor, valued at $35,000.

The event raised $40,000 for the Ryan Newman Foundation Endowment.

Franklin’s Scott Browning placed fourth at the Jan. 3-6 Stren Series Southeast Division tournament at Lake Okeechobee, Fla.. His four-day haul of 55-3 paid $8,000.

Glenn Browne of Ocala, Fla., won the event with 6-2 and received $25,000 and a Ranger boat plus a Ranger Cup bonus of $3,000.
