Broad Street Fishing Pier

The new fishing pier will free up New Bern’s Riverwalk, which has been used by anglers over the years.

New Bern building pier on Neuse River

A new fishing pier is being constructed on the Neuse River in New Bern, NC. Construction on the Broad Street Fishing Pier began on March 4. The project should be completed soon.

It’s a project that Mayor Jefferey Odham said is a few years in the making.

“We started talking about this a few years ago, how to improve waterway access to our residents and visitors, because oftentimes we’d hear people say they would love to have somewhere to fish,” said Odham. “This project is actually going to be twofold.”

Aside from giving anglers a better place to fish, it will also free up the riverwalk so it can be used as intended. Anglers have used it for fishing over the years, and this has interfered with those using it as a walkway, its true purpose.

The pier will be built to the Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The pier, which will stretch 216 feet into the river, will be shaped like a T, with a 130-foot wide T-shape at the end.

The pier itself is Phase 1 of the project. Phase 2 includes a parking lot and bathrooms.

Funding for the project is coming from several sources, including $120,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act funds, and a $115,000 grant from the NC Wildlife Habitat Foundation. CCA-NC has donated a number of supplies for the project as well.
